Following an explanation is one step. Being able to tackle the next question independently takes practice. At Aventus, our 90-minute classes give students time to work through both, with a tutor there to check their understanding and help them improve.

Time to explain, practise and give individual feedback

Every Aventus class runs for 1.5 hours, with a maximum of six students. We chose this format to make room for clear teaching, questions and practice within the same lesson.

Small classes let us look closely at each student’s working. We can spot a missed step, explain it differently and check their next attempt. Students have time to ask the follow-up question that helps an idea make sense.

What your child does during a lesson

Our lessons move between explanation, discussion, worked examples and independent practice. Tutors adjust the pace and level of support as they check how students are progressing.

  • Revisit earlier learning. Review homework or a recent topic and identify questions that need attention.
  • Work through a clear example. The tutor explains the steps and the reasoning behind them.
  • Put the method into practice. Students attempt questions while the tutor checks their work and provides individual guidance.
  • Use the feedback. Students correct errors, try another question or move on to a more demanding task.

For example, a student learning algebra might understand the first few steps but lose track when negative numbers appear. We can work through that step together, then give them another question to attempt themselves. That second attempt helps us see whether the explanation has made a difference.

Teaching methods supported by research

The Australian Education Research Organisation’s guidance on explicit instruction recommends breaking new learning into manageable steps, demonstrating worked examples and providing purposeful practice. It also describes gradually reducing support as students become more proficient.

The Education Endowment Foundation’s feedback guidance explains how well-designed feedback can address misunderstandings and help students progress.

These principles guide how we use our lesson time. Our 90-minute format gives us room to explain a concept, watch students apply it and help them act on feedback before they leave. That opportunity to teach, check and respond is why we chose it for Aventus.

Support for catching up and moving ahead

Tailored tuition starts with understanding what a student needs next. One student may need another explanation and supported practice. Another may be ready to apply the same idea to an unfamiliar exam question or work beyond what their school class has covered.

Our diagnostic testing, progress tracking and conversations with families help us identify that starting point. Throughout the term, tutors adapt questions, explanations and feedback to the student’s understanding and goals.

Keep the learning going between classes

Detailed workbooks and weekly homework give students another opportunity to practise. Their attempts help us plan the next lesson, while progress reports and parent feedback keep you informed about what they are working on.
